Hikerbabes Member Group Hike
(for members of the Hikerbabes Facebook Group RSVP here)
Join Jennifer Hillman, co-author and Courtney Grim, Photographer of Secret Places of Western New York: 25 Scenic Trails on one of Jennifer’s very favorite hikes, The Lost Rail Trail of Niagara.
This is chapter 7 in our book, Secret Places of Western New York: 25 Scenic Hikes. We’ll meet that the trailhead entrance at the Suspension Bridge, hike down the stone steps, have a quick jaunt under the old Suspension Bridge ruins and then head south towards the giant cataract of Niagara Falls. The hike is 4-mile loop and is moderate to difficult. Difficult if there are rock slides we need to climb over.
Why is this one of my favorites?
It’s still a secret, the stairs were just opened a few years ago. Jennifer grew up in Niagara Falls and as a local hiker she had to bushwhack down a not-so-safe trail to get to this wild section of the gorge.
What will you see?
The beautiful green-blue water swirling by, tons of birds migrating above and looking for a ‘free’ meal below of some stunned fish that float to the top. The $1,000,000 view of Niagara. We purposely hike toward Niagara so we get the picture-postcard-perfect view and the free ride back up via the Schoellkopf Power Station Elevator. We’ll walk back along the Niagara Rim Trail towards the trailhead.
